I didn’t remember Kyle Harrington looking this awful back at the farm, but then I guessed the presence of a dead body distracted me enough I didn’t notice. Detective Pearson showed his ID, and Kyle confirmed he remembered me from the day before. I sat quietly and let Pearson take the lead while I studied Kyle.

He certainly looked like he wasn’t faking illness. Sallow skin, acne worthy of a teenager, and a comb over that made him look thirty years older than his current confirmed forty-two. They all contributed to his overall bad appearance. I knew he owned three gyms—fitness centers—in Newbury, and he had been heavily involved with running competitively when he was younger. There had been some talk about the Olympics before an ankle injury and a fall out with his coach. He left competitive sport after that but resurfaced a while later when he opened his first gym.

Pearson had told me on the way over Kyle had been a “big lad” as he described him at school before he took up running. Apparently, Pearson’s younger brother was in the same year, and Kyle was a bully. Kyle was tall for his age and at thirteen had quite a group of followers. Kyle wasn’t popular for his stunning personality, but basically because he put the fear of God in anyone who disagreed with him.

The doctor hadn’t been able to release information obviously, but it was Kyle himself who told us he’d had a heart attack.

“I hope you threw away the key,” he snarled addressing me. When I looked blank, he snarled at me. “When you locked that girl up!”

I quirked an eyebrow but I knew who he meant. Obviously, so did Pearson. “We actually have no reason to believe this was indeed a murder,” Pearson responded mildly. “And the whole thing may still be deemed an accidental death. There’s no real sign of foul play, after all. Can you confirm the time you returned home?”

“I walked into the kitchen at ten past one exactly. The cellar door was open, and I walked over to close it. Only to see my mother’s murderer kneeling beside her body.”

“That’s a very precise time,” Pearson commented evenly, not letting Kyle bait him.

Kyle nodded then reached over to pick up a glass of water. He took a few swallows then put it down. “Because mum had asked me to be in for lunch at one, and I knew being late would upset her. I glanced at my watch as I opened the door.”

“Is your watch accurate?”

Kyle scoffed and reached over picking up a fancy silver watch that looked far too big for him. “This is a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona,” he added smugly. “If it’s good enough for racing drivers I’m sure it tells the time accurately.”

“Where had you been?” I asked a question for the first time.

Kyle turned to me. “I had a meeting with my manager in Newbury, then drove home.”

“Can you give us the manager’s name and contact details, please?” Pearson added.
