I didnât remember Kyle Harrington looking this awful back at the farm, but then I guessed the presence of a dead body distracted me enough I didnât notice. Detective Pearson showed his ID, and Kyle confirmed he remembered me from the day before. I sat quietly and let Pearson take the lead while I studied Kyle.
He certainly looked like he wasnât faking illness. Sallow skin, acne worthy of a teenager, and a comb over that made him look thirty years older than his current confirmed forty-two. They all contributed to his overall bad appearance. I knew he owned three gymsâfitness centersâin Newbury, and he had been heavily involved with running competitively when he was younger. There had been some talk about the Olympics before an ankle injury and a fall out with his coach. He left competitive sport after that but resurfaced a while later when he opened his first gym.
Pearson had told me on the way over Kyle had been a âbig ladâ as he described him at school before he took up running. Apparently, Pearsonâs younger brother was in the same year, and Kyle was a bully. Kyle was tall for his age and at thirteen had quite a group of followers. Kyle wasnât popular for his stunning personality, but basically because he put the fear of God in anyone who disagreed with him.
The doctor hadnât been able to release information obviously, but it was Kyle himself who told us heâd had a heart attack.
âI hope you threw away the key,â he snarled addressing me. When I looked blank, he snarled at me. âWhen you locked that girl up!â
I quirked an eyebrow but I knew who he meant. Obviously, so did Pearson. âWe actually have no reason to believe this was indeed a murder,â Pearson responded mildly. âAnd the whole thing may still be deemed an accidental death. Thereâs no real sign of foul play, after all. Can you confirm the time you returned home?â
âI walked into the kitchen at ten past one exactly. The cellar door was open, and I walked over to close it. Only to see my motherâs murderer kneeling beside her body.â
âThatâs a very precise time,â Pearson commented evenly, not letting Kyle bait him.
Kyle nodded then reached over to pick up a glass of water. He took a few swallows then put it down. âBecause mum had asked me to be in for lunch at one, and I knew being late would upset her. I glanced at my watch as I opened the door.â
âIs your watch accurate?â
Kyle scoffed and reached over picking up a fancy silver watch that looked far too big for him. âThis is a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona,â he added smugly. âIf itâs good enough for racing drivers Iâm sure it tells the time accurately.â
âWhere had you been?â I asked a question for the first time.
Kyle turned to me. âI had a meeting with my manager in Newbury, then drove home.â
âCan you give us the managerâs name and contact details, please?â Pearson added.
